Anti-Spam FAQs

Q: Why is part of the functionality called 'Spam Assessment'?

A: NetPilot Spam Assessment feature alters the header of incoming emails to indicate to the email client that it has allocated a particular score using its inbuilt 'assessment' criteria. If the incoming email scores more than 5.0 on its rating scheme, then it will flag the email is Spam. The exact score is appended to the email header and can then be used by the email client such as MS Outlook to determine how to handle the email

Q: So how does the Assessment work?

A: The key to successful Spam recognition is to use a variety of identification tactics. These include: Header Analysis which detect forged headers and Spam tool signatures; Text Analysis which looks for keywords in the body of the email as well as the header subject; and use of Spam tracking blacklists. Overall each incoming email is subject to assessment of over 939 different characteristics. Spam Assessment uses the tests defined by SpamAssassin : To see details of the 939 tests : Click Here

Q: Will the NetPilot delete or quarantine incoming Spam?

A: The administrator can optionally decide to delete incoming emails above a threshold level, or just pass the emails through to each individual email client for individually tailored handling specific to the users needs. If the optional Email Policy Filter (Email Policy) software is also loaded then the administrator can quarantine suspect Spam, and decide how to rate this type of incoming email in future.

Q: How does SpamCop work?

A: The SpamCop facility is an extra blacklist of known spammers. The standard Spam Assessment facility uses a number of other blacklists.

Q: Where can I find out more about Bayesian Filtering?

A: The side bar list of documents above refers to our white paper and Getting Started manuals which have more information.

Q: Which email client can I use with NetPilot Spam Assessment to tailor individual user requirements?

A: The NetPilot Spam Assessment feature requires use of an email client that can create and act on 'rules' regarding an email header. The standard version Outlook is ideal for this task. Outlook Express has the concept of rules but they do not allow use with email headers. Therefore Outlook Express is NOT a suitable email client for this application.

Q: Do I have to modify the email client and add rules?

A: No. You can run SpamCop and Spam Assessment and delete as much Spam as possible before it reaches the individual PC. Alternatively you can empower your users to set their own rules on their own PCs dependent on Span scoring from the NetPilot.

Q: What happens when the email is received on my PC if I want my own rules?

A: Typically, incoming suspect emails would be quarantined into an appropriately named subdirectory e.g. 'Suspect Spam'. The individual recipient can then quickly review sender/subject and manually delete blocks of emails. Alternatively the recipient may care to create more sophisticated rules whereby very high scoring Spam emails are immediately deleted, but perhaps more marginal are left for quick review in the quarantine area. This rule setting procedure can be precisely tailored in accordance with the needs of the particular individual user.

Q: Will the Anti-Spam features work on my older NetPilot?

A: Unfortunately Anti-Spam features do not work on older NetPilots, specifically : MK1, MK2.1, MK2.2, Lite, the original 4U Enterprise, or on the current NetPilot Remote. The good news is you can get a £1000 trade up allowance against a new NetPilot Plus which has all the power need for this and many other features. For more details - Click Here !
