From software V6.1.11, we included a VPN facility called MobileVPN, specifically targeted at catering for roaming users with mobile devices. It provides secure SSL VPN connectivity from iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows to the organisation’s network protected by NetPilot or SoHoBlue security appliances. Now from V6.2.5 we can provide centralised Authentication via Active Directory.
V6.2.5 MobileVPN with Active Directory Authentication
MobileVPN supports Active Directory authentication in conjuction with V6.2.5 software.
Within the profile settings of a MobileVPN profile, it is now possible to select the authentication method. The possible choices are “NetPilot User Authentication” (for the NetPilot’s built in user database) and “Active Directory Authentication”.
It’s possible to limit VPN access to just members of a particular Active Directory security group by entering a valid security group name in the VPN Group box in the NetPilot/SoHoBlue configuration.
This feature is obviously of appeal in education establishments where staff and pupils may be using mobile devices such as tablets or laptop PCs, need secure connections and must be authenticated by the establishment’s centrally based Active Directory server.
The feature will also be of interest to businesses who also utilise Active Directory and will find the ability to securely communicate from mobile devices from any location, yet utilise the organisation’s central network administration mechanisms, to be of great benefit.
V6.1.11 MobileVPN Connectivity for iPhone, iPad and Android
From software V6.1.11, we included a VPN facility called MobileVPN, specifically targeted at catering for roaming users with mobile devices. It provides secure SSL VPN connectivity from iPhone, iPad and Android to the organisation’s network protected by NetPilot or SoHoBlue security appliances.
MobileVPN brings a new class of functionality for NetPilot and SoHoblue users and Network Managers, simplifying VPN deployment for remote workers and adding support for iOS and Android devices. MobileVPN provides similarly secure connectivity users currently enjoy for Windows and Macs (desktop and laptops), but now for the mobile world of tablets and smart phones.
Currently supported platforms include iOS, Android, Windows and Linux. Mobile VPN uses a combination of username/password security and X.509 SSL certificates to combine ease of deployment with high security. As well as the new support for iOS and Android devices, an additional benefit of the MobileVPN implementation is that all VPN configuration is now greatly streamlined. Configuring a new client on the NetPilot/SoHoBlue is now as simple as creating a new user account. Thus deployments for Windows client devices are now simplified too!
Some of the key points include:
• Secure remote access to central site
• Multiple profile support to allow differing connections*
• Secure remote desktop / email / file server access
• Ideal for Network Managers on the move
• Uses full SSL encryption so gives total security
• Works with your mobile devices operating over 3G/4G or Wi-Fi
The Mobile Functionality is incorporated from v6.1.11 software for NetPilot and SoHoBlue units. The NetPilot MobileVPN client end – the App – is free-of-charge.

*Windows and Linux client implementations allow for multiple simultaneous active VPN sessions with multiple profiles. Currently, iOS and Android restrictions mean that you may have multiple profiles, but only one active connection at any point in time.
